Standard smoke alarms are not loud enough to wake up most children in an emergency situation, a study has found.
Queensland mother Brenda Ashley put her kids to the test, setting off a smoke detector in the middle of the night. The standard smoke alarms are not loud enough to wake up most children in an emergency situation, a study has found."It's scary when you think about it."The standard volume of a smoke detector is 75 decibels, however researchers from Victoria University say the noise won't wake up eight out of 10 children.
"Across the night children get more time in the deep stages of sleep which means it's more difficult to wake them up," researcher Michelle Bell said. "I would recommend that parents teach what the smoke alarm signal sounds like and teach them what to do if they hear it in the night while they're asleep."killed father Wayne Godinet and his five sons.Queensland Mother, Brenda Ashley was shocked that none of her eight children woke up to the sound of the fire alarm.
New fire alarm requirements are already being rolled out across Queensland. Homes with smoke detectors older than 10 years must replace them with new photoelectric smoke alarms."[The changes] will require all homes to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in all hallways and on each storey of their home," Mark Halverson from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said.Fire authorities are urging families to act sooner rather than later.
