There runs in seventh inning get Padres close before Dodgers pull away to win seventh consecutive series between the teams
The Padres finished a winning road trip by losing another game and another series and another season series to the Dodgers. The visitors made it close for a few minutes, scoring three times in the seventh inning, but the Dodgers immediately responded by scoring four runs to pull away for a 9-4 victory.
For now, it is not about the Dodgers. No one is catching them before the end of the regular season. At 92-41, the best record in the major leagues, they moved to within nine victories and/or Padres’ losses of clinching their ninth NL West title in 10 seasons. “It’s just about winning as many games as you can,” Melvin said. “With as many wild card teams as you have right now, it’s about getting in. Every game is important.”
His third pitch of the inning was smacked a projected 428 feet to the bleachers beyond left field by Will Smith. He walked Justin Turner, left a slider up that Joey Gallo lined into right field and then hit Chris Taylor, ostensibly on the hand even though the ball shot off the bat as if it had hit the hit handle and Taylor showed no sign of being hit.Melvin said the Padres ran out of time to challenge the call.
Down 5-1, the Padres’ comeback began with Soto’s first hit in 19 at-bats, a one-out single in the seventh. Josh Bell’s two-out single gave the Padres runners at the corners. A double by Profar scored both runners, and Jake Cronenworth’s double scored Profar to make it 5-4. Matt Beaty was hit by a pitch before Trent Grisham was called out on a third strike that was well inside off the plate.
