'It's really bad': Brixton residents protest after seven weeks without water
Residents of Brixton, Johannesburg, took to the streets on Monday morning to protest after going without water for seven weeks.e city has been caught in the grip of water shortages for months, and a limping reticulation system, load shedding and a recent heatwave have worsened the situation.
Brixton is affected by the ailing Commando System, often the first to struggle during water outages because it supplies high-lying areas and the reticulation relies on pressure to push water. When reservoirs are low, the water pressure drops and high-lying areas go without water. Meanwhile, the low-lying areas use water, and the cycle continues."The Commando System is one of our biggest and most systems. It was affected twice last week by outages at Eikenhof ," she said.
Eikenhof supplies the greater Soweto area, as well as Roodepoort, Hursthill, Crosby and Brixton. Palmiet supplies Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, the South Hills tower and the Greater Midrand Reservoirs in Johannesburg. Brixton resident Felicity Coetzee, 59, said the community would take to the streets again on Tuesday if there were no responses to the water issue on Monday night.
