It's Official, The Star Wars Prequels Are Not Over Yet

The Star Wars prequel renaissance is officially here.

Disney and Lucasfilm have officially confirmed that the prequel trilogy of Star Wars movies aren't done yet over two decades after Revenge of the Sith.

The prequel trilogy of Star Wars movies ended in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. Anakin Skywalker's story and transformation into Darth Vader was complete, the Jedi Order had fallen, and the stage was almost perfectly set for the events of A New Hope and the original trilogy. For several years, Disney and Lucasfilm treated the Star Wars prequel trilogy as a completed story.

Star Wars shows like The Clone Wars told the story of the interim years between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but the films had moved on to decades after Return of the Jedi in the Star Wars timeline with the sequel trilogy. The prequel trilogy, along with all the criticism and hate it received, was being left in the past. As the sequel trilogy was being released, however, the prequels went through a renaissance.

Thanks to memes and the passage of time, the prequels were being regarded as beloved and nostalgic movies instead of middling entries into the Skywalker Saga, and Disney and Lucasfilm revived them as a result. Disney+ shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi, the last season of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and even the Star Wars: Jedi video games all dealt with the immediate aftermath of Revenge of the Sith.

Even as Star Wars began reviving the prequels, it seemed like a temporary thing. Obi-Wan Kenobi was a limited series, The Clone Wars only returned for one more season, and The Bad Batch ended in 2024. All the while, Star Wars was also more focused on the sequel era thanks to the Mandoverse. Now, however, the prequel trilogy is officially continuing thanks to Ahsoka season 2 and Maul - Shadow Lord season 2.

Ahsoka & Maul - Shadow Lord Are Continuing The Prequel Trilogy's Story Two upcoming Star Wars shows, Ahsoka and Maul - Shadow Lord, are keeping the story of the Star Wars prequel trilogy alive. That's much easier to see in the animated series Maul - Shadow Lord, which takes place in the immediate aftermath of Revenge of the Sith and follows Darth Maul as he seeks to rebuild his criminal empire following the Siege of Mandalore in The Clone Wars.

The show centers around a major prequel villain and examines the early days of the Galactic Empire, which very clearly ties it to the prequel trilogy. Ahsoka, on the other hand, has a looser connection to the prequels. While it does follow Anakin's padawan, Ahsoka Tano, the series is set years after Return of the Jedi and is part of the Mandoverse.

Still, Ahsoka was visited by Anakin's Force ghost in Ahsoka season 1, the series heavily deals with the Mortis gods introduced in The Clone Wars, it features survivors of Order 66 like Baylan Skoll, and it directly succeeds Star Wars Rebels, which itself was a product of the interim years between the prequel and original trilogies. In both Ahsoka and Maul - Shadow Lord, it's clear to see that the prequel trilogy is still heavily impacting Star Wars as a whole.

Gone are the days of the sequel trilogy trying to ignore the prequels. Now, everything from Anakin's fall to the dark side to Order 66 are core parts of modern Star Wars. Given how few Star Wars shows are in development, the prequels are directly influencing the majority of upcoming projects for the franchise, with the sole exception of Star Wars: Visions and its upcoming spinoff, The Ninth Jedi.

Star Wars' Upcoming Movies May Be The End Of The Prequel Renaissance While the prequel trilogy is still experiencing a renaissance and not over yet, it may not last much longer. The prequels are heavily affecting modern Star Wars, but they're not as prevalent as they once were.

Only Ahsoka and Maul - Shadow Lord are directly tied to the prequel trilogy, while every single upcoming Star Wars movie is focused on a different part of the history of the galaxy far, far away. The Mandalorian and Grogu took place after Return of the Jedi, and the upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter will take place in the aftermath of The Rise of Skywalker.

After that, Star Wars is doubling down on the sequel era with Rey's New Jedi Order movie and a trilogy penned by Simon Kinberg, which is widely rumored to be Episodes X, XI, and XII. The only other film in development is James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi, which takes place tens of thousands of years before the prequels. Star Wars as a whole is also shifting focus back onto movies.

As previously mentioned, there are only a handful of Star Wars shows on the horizon, and only one live-action series. The future of Star Wars lives on the big screen, but every confirmed movie in development is moving away from the prequel trilogy. The immediate future of the prequels is safe, but it's very possible that the prequel renaissance will be over in just a few years.

That being said, there's also a very good chance that Star Wars will return to the prequels at some point in the future. Fans love the prequel trilogy and Disney and Lucasfilm love telling stories set in the years after Revenge of the Sith. Just because there isn't a prequel-related story ready to go after Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 doesn't mean there won't be another one down the line.

The future of the Star Wars prequel trilogy seems to be safe for now.
