Both winners were behind in first results on election night but slowly pulled ahead
Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez overcame an election-night deficit to defeat a much better-financed challenge by Councilmember Ryan Keim, according to results certified Tuesday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Sanchez went ahead for the first time more than a week after the Nov. 5 election by only 31 votes. Since then, her margin has gradually increased as additional results were released, and in the final count Tuesday she had 39,100 votes to Keim’s 38,868, her largest lead of all. The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, which endorsed him over the incumbent mayor, donated more than $17,000 to his campaign.
“Esther has done so much for our neighborhoods and businesses, it would take me all day to go through it,” said Shari Mackin, a former City Council member. “She’s always put Oceanside first.” “Esther was always a vote we could count on,” Nygaard said. “Oceanside will benefit from your actions for generations. That’s a legacy to be proud of.”
In another close Oceanside election, City Treasurer Victor Roy, who also was ahead on election night, lost to first-time candidate Phyllis Dominguez.
