Windows users yet to upgrade to Windows 11 that an unsupported PC is an “open door” for hackers. The “hidden dangers of unsupported systems" has never been as stark as the aftermath of Windows 10’s end-of-life.

A flurry of headlines in the first two weeks of October provided a steady countdown to the Oct. 14 Windows 10 deadline, after which Microsoft repeatedly confirmed security updates would suddenly end. That October has seen the usual raft of— you can opt into its essentially free Windows 10 extended security updates right until they really do end in 2026. For enterprise users, you can secure a longer, paid update for three years. If you don’t want to jump through Microsoft’s hoops — regularly logging into an online accounting and backing up PC settings to OneDrive — you can buy the 12-month extended support in the company’s store,If you’re running Windows 10 and haven’t yet taken up the ESU, Microsoft warns you’re now “more vulnerable and susceptible to viruses,” but even if you enroll late “you will receive any previous updates as well as any future updates.”if you’re running a fully licensed version of Windows 10 on a PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, meaning it ticks the various technical boxes per Microsoft’s on-device test.The ESU is the bare minimum you should have now. If you haven’t yet enrolled, please do that today. But it’s not a good alternative to a Windows 11 upgrade for those that can. Windows 11 is more secure and will enjoy feature updates, where Windows 10 will now be bare bones only. Microsoft wants you to buy a new Copilot, AI-heavy PC. But you don’t need to do that. Just upgrade the machine you have, if you can. Microsoft specifically calls out those opting for an ESU on PCs that can upgrade as “just one more year thinking," which it says is a problem. But doing nothing is much worse. Whether to update or upgrade if your call — both can be grabbed for free right now.
