The Anchorage School District launched a new Teacher Apprenticeship Program, where apprentices earn their education degree while gaining on-the-job experience, according to ASD.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School District has launched a new Teacher Apprenticeship Program, where apprentices earn their education degree while gaining on-the-job experience.“He’s really good right now because he comes to my classroom to communicate with me and to just brainstorm.
” Stanker said. “He sees my students, too. That this is what I do in the classroom.” Daraman works as a paraprofessional at Kincaid Elementary while taking college courses to earn his teaching degree. Stanker offers advice and helps with Daraman’s studies while observing Stanker’s teaching in her second-grade classroom. “My role with that is to guide him and make sure that he is submitting all the requirements for UAA,” Stanker said. “And sharing some resources with him at this early stage of his apprenticeship.” Daraman says this makes all the difference because regular schooling relies heavily on technology, which can be challenging for him.The challenge doesn’t stop Daraman’s passion to be a teacher. “You have to love your work. I think that’s the core point, why you become a teacher,” Daraman said. “Because if you’re like ‘oh I want to become a teacher,’ but not in your heart, don’t do it.” Wendy Zorea, the principal of Kincaid Elementary, noted that, with teacher shortages in the district, it is a good feeling to train teachers of their own. Stanker said this program is a pilot program, but she would love to mentor other-to-be teachers in the future and give back to the teaching community that has given so much to her.An Anchorage woman froze to death.
