Disgruntled Khayelitsha residents have braced the cold and wet weather conditions to protest the Department of Home Affairs' slow processing of IDs and birth certificates.

Community activist Sinathemba Mtheza said the community was fed-up of waiting on the department to process legal documentation.Mtheza added in some cases, residents have been waiting for IDs since 2013, while some parents have not received their children's birth certificates, which meant they could not register them for social grants.
She said previously, arrangements have been made with management that documentation would be issued, but still the problem persisted. "Whenever I walk the long distance from my home in Khayelitsha to the department, I am always disappointed because there is never a satisfying answer," Mtshoniswa added.
A 75-year-old grandmother struggled to hold back the tears as she told News24 how she battled to get food for the young ones in her family.
