PETALING JAYA: Sabahan Goh Shuen Tong served a double delight at the 100Plus National Junior Circuit first leg when she captured the Division One Under-16 girls’ singles and doubles titles in style.
Shuen Tong justified her top billing in the singles by blowing away joint third-fourth seed Sik Xiao Hui of Selangor 21-18,21-10 in a 22-minute final at the Selangor Badminton Association Hall yesterday.
She then teamed up with Cassey Rompog in the doubles to again defeat Xiao Hui and her partner Wong Zi Yi 21-19,21-17 in the final.“I still have a lot to learn especially the speed and the game at the net, ” said Shuen Tong. “After this win, my opponents will be out to find my weaknesses and this will definitely put pressure on my game, ” added the Sabahan, who aims to be better prepared.
It also turned out to be a glorious day for Sabah, as Daniel Elvestly triumphed in the boys’ under-16 final after beating Johorean Wee Yee Hern 22-20,21-14. Yee Hern, who had stunned top seed Kok Jia Zheng in the quarter-finals, came close to being a game up against Daniel but ended up losing the set narrowly.“So I changed tactics and focused more on netplay and it paid off. Of course, things will be different after this win, so I have to work harder for the challenges ahead.”
