The officer has been removed from frontline duties after footage of the incident was shared on social media in a country world-renowned for its love of animals.

An officer who used his police car to twice strike a runaway calf has been removed from frontline duties in an incident that has outraged the animal-loving British public.

In the video, the young cow is seen on the loose in the market town, around 28 kilometres west of central London, before a marked police car accelerates, sending the 200-kilogram animal rolling down the road. She staggered to her feet before the police car again drives into her, pinning her head underneath its front axle.

Surrey Police Deputy Chief Constable Nev Kemp said he fully appreciated the distress the incident had caused and would ensure it was “thoroughly and diligently investigated”. Advocates for Animals, a law firm, said that it has been instructed by the charity Humane Society International UK to look into criminal and civil prosecutions.

“Honestly, when I saw the video, I thought he should lose his job. I just thought it was disgusting, I couldn’t believe it.
