Calls for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 89, to step down before her term is up have raised debates about ageism, sexism and the subject of vigor in doing a job.
Calls for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., 89, to step down before her term is up in about two years have raised debates about ageism, sexism and the subject of vigor in doing a job.
“It’s neither sexist or ageist at this point,” said Karlyn Bowman, senior fellow at right-leaning public-policy think tank American Enterprise Institute. “After someone had the absences she’s had—a man’s age would be brought up as well.” “As long as senators are treating Sen. Feinstein the same as they have any male or younger senator, the call for Sen. Feinstein to resign would not be discriminatory. But are the senators treating her the same? That is the case for investigation,” Ghilarducci said.
“I don’t think Biden is too old to run for president. He’s more than competent. I do think Feinstein may not be up to the challenge at this point in her life. It’s a little troublesome,” Schlossberg said. Bowman said the issue of age hovers around both Biden and former President Donald Trump, 76, who has announced his re-election campaign. “Clearly there are doubt about their ages. For older candidates, in the end, age can be a factor,” she said.Sen. Chris Murphy told MSNBC’s Morning Joe last week that he disagreed with the calls for Feinstein to step down.
