Brett Cross had a short list of demands during his two-week sit-in at the Uvalde school district’s central office: put the police force on ice and investigate its actions on the day 19 children and two teachers were gunned down at Robb Elementary.“I want everybody to get out and vote,” said Cross, who lost his nephew Uziyah, a 10-year-old he had raised as a son, in the shooting.

Evidence of that is everywhere here. Large crowds of angry parents, their families and friends descended on the Uvalde City Council and school district last summer. The Crosses and others launched a group, Lives Robbed, to seek changes.
