Brett Cross had a short list of demands during his two-week sit-in at the Uvalde school district’s central office: put the police force on ice and investigate its actions on the day 19 children and two teachers were gunned down at Robb Elementary.“I want everybody to get out and vote,” said Cross, who lost his nephew Uziyah, a 10-year-old he had raised as a son, in the shooting.

“Uvalde’s been the way it is for many years,” said Cazares, 43. “It’s a good-old boy system, and it needs to be changed from the bottom up.” State Rep. The Crosses and others launched a group, Lives Robbed, to seek changes.
