It soon could cost more to get a vehicle towed in Harris County through Uber-like app
The cost of getting towed in Harris County could go up through the use of an Uber-like app selected by the sheriff’s office in an attempt to eliminate the rush of wrecker drivers speeding to accident scenes.approved by Commissioners Court last October, the San Francisco-based company AutoReturn will manage tows for the sheriff's office. AutoReturn operates at no cost to the county, funded instead through a fee added to the cost of the tow paid by the vehicle owner.
The sheriff's office selected the area, which includes much of Precinct 2, because it has the lowest volume of tows, making it the most manageable area to test a new program. In the weeks since the pilot began, 258 vehicle owners have paid the new fee, according to the sheriff's office.
