) - While the triple digit heat index can be dangerous for anyone, it can particularly take a toll on student athletes who are often outside for many hours during practice. A lot of time protecting players is as simple as choosing the right drink, water being the preference of experts, however there are products parents can put in their child’s backpack to further help.

Whether you have seen them featured in viral water recipe videos online or just passed them in the store, the Chief of Sports Medicine at UAB said electrolyte packets work and can be a good tool for student athletes. “So those electrolyte packets that you can pour into your water, those do help you replenish electrolytes,” said Dr. Amit Momaya. “Now I will say most people can do well with just water throughout the day.”He knows it is tempting just to drink it on the field, but he said student athletes should play the long game. “I think the number one thing is people all focus on hydrating during practice, but it’s actually hydration throughout the week during the day that’s extremely important,” Momaya shared. “A lot of people think they can just hydrate while they are sweating or playing sports, you actually need to stay hydrated throughout the week.”“Especially football players who are having to wear a lot of gear, heavy padding,” Momaya said. The sports medicine expert said football players need time to take their gear off and cool down between plays. He urges athletes to listen to their bodies. If they start feeling dizzy, nauseous or weak, they need to speak up. “A lot of the coaches and athletic trainers at schools know these signs and symptoms to watch out for, but if it’s a player or an athlete they have to report these,” Momaya said. “They can’t keep just toughing it out cause it can get pretty dangerous.” Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency.
