SoMa Mexican restaurant Don Ramon's closed its doors after more than 40 years in business.
, the closure came after the Ramirez family's landlord at 225 11th St. raised their rent $10,000 per month to $15,000 per month.
Problems arose early in the pandemic when the Ramirez family faced financial setbacks due to a business deal gone awry. In 2014, the family leased the office space above their SoMa restaurant to a non-profit organization that illegally transformed the space into dwelling units. The Chronicle reports that the Ramirez family, which owned the building, did not know of the illegal housing upstairs.
, they took out a $5 million loan to repair plumbing damages caused by the tenants. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, the Ramirez's were at risk of foreclosure when they couldn’t make loan payments but, with the help of city leaders, were able to continue operating the restaurant. That same year, Don Ramon’s earned San Francisco Legacy Business status.
