In a move to accelerate autonomous commercial trucking without the presence of even a safety driver or passenger on-board, a concept called “freight-only,” Japanese automakerCurrently, trucks equipped with Mountain View, Calif.-based Gatik ’s autonomous technology with safety drivers aboard are serving so-called middle-mile routes for such major clients as Walmart, Tyson Foods, Kroger, Loblaws, Georgia-Pacific and Pitney-Bowes.
For Gatik, this all means getting a lot closer to reaching its goal of providing freight-only deliveries at a much larger scale.“We believe that finding the right partner in the OEM space is absolutely critical in order to get to that scale,” said Philip Reinckens, Senior Vice President of Commercialization and Operations, in an interview. “It ensures quantity, it ensures safety and ensures reliability, ensures interest cost control.
The company defines “meaningful scale” as conducting daily commercial freight-only operations for various customers between different locations. “Once a route or network is approved for freight-only operations, Gatik has the flexibility to deploy as many trucks as necessary, all with the same hardware configuration, to serve that route or network effectively,” a spokesperson said.
