Israeli police storm Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City during a sensitive holiday season, raising the specter of an escalation in violence.
The U.S. is so far empty-handed in dealing with Israel’s radical government and dysfunctional Palestinian leadership., scores of Muslim worshipers have been trying to stay overnight in the mosque, a practice that is typically permitted only during the last 10 days of the monthlong holiday. Israeli police have entered nightly to evict the worshipers.
. He described the worshipers who locked themselves in the mosque as “extremists” who prevented Muslims from entering the mosque peacefully. Israeli police said they moved in after “several law-breaking youths and masked agitators” brought fireworks, sticks and stones and barricaded themselves inside the mosque. Police said the youths chanted violent slogans and locked the front doors.
