Tensions are rising in the Middle East following the assassination of Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on Friday. After days of anticipation of a possible Iranian response to Nasrallah’s killing, Iran fired ballistic missiles into Israel on Tuesday. No fatalities have been reported. Israel is expected to retaliate imminently.
And on Monday, NBC News reported that “the Pentagon said it was sending a ‘few thousand’ additional troops to bolster the roughly 40,000 American forces in the area.” With the threat of a full-scale regional war seemingly rising by the hour, many are now asking how we got here. For nearly a year, U.S. officials have urged actors in the region to lower the temperature and prevent the conflict from escalating. But those warnings apparently fell on deaf ears. U.S.
