Deif, who was designated as a terrorist by the State Department in 2015, is considered one of the main architects of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Israeli officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the Israel Defense Forces had targeted “Mohammad Deif and Rafa Salama, the Commander of Hamas’ Khan Yunis Brigade,” describing them as “two of the masterminds of the October 7th Massacre.”The operation had a high toll on Gazans in the area, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry.

Israeli forces originally withdrew from the northern city in January but earlier this week the military warned residents to evacuate.that Israel was exploring possibility of using an electronic surveillance system along the border between Gaza and Egypt that would allow its troops to withdraw.
