The Israeli company Ruby AI has reportedly developed a specialized robotic system for the Israel Defence Forces . The Jerusalem Post stated that the robot transforms tank maintenance from a 48-hour manual process into a streamlined two-hour autonomous task.
Operating with full autonomy, the system eliminates the need for personnel in high-risk zones, shielding soldiers from toxic chemicals, corrosive oils, and blistering thermal conditions.CEO Daniel Ben Dov stated that the company avoids “cute” consumer robotics and instead focuses on heavy-duty, repetitive, and dangerous physical labor.Tank maintenance operationsTank maintenance has long been a tough, 48-hour marathon of manual labor. Soldiers spent days scrubbed in grease, exposed to toxic chemicals, and blistering heat to find a single faulty sensor. Now, that same job takes two hours, and the robot does it alone.Resembling a high-tech “mechanical octopus” from an animated film, the new autonomous system uses multiple specialized arms to penetrate tank engines to clean, scan, and perform intricate maintenance. “We are developing both the robotic arms themselves and their brains,” Dov told JP. A veteran of the defense and space industries, Ben Dov founded the company in 2020 with a blunt objective: tackle the dirty, dull, and dangerous work humans shouldn’t have to touch.Compared with the sterile robots found in car factories, this system is built for the chaos of the real world. It doesn’t need a clean floor or perfect lighting. The secret is what the company calls Physical AI.“We have developed a Physical AI core that can learn elements of the physical world, understand what it sees, and perform precise actions. This is not a sterile factory robot, but one that can work in mud, dust, heat, and cold,” added Dov.It thrives in mud, dust, and extreme temperatures. Using a core of sensors and spatial intelligence, the robot sees the engine’s complexity and learns to navigate around obstacles that would stump a standard machine.Reportedly, the system has reached full operational status, shielding personnel from hazardous maintenance duties.Future robotsRuby AI isn’t a newcomer to high-stakes automation. Before the IDF deal, the company reportedly worked with the United Arab Emirates, deploying a fully autonomous refueling robot. “If a robot knows how to refuel, it knows how to deal with hazardous materials,” Ben Dov noted. That logic is now being pushed to the extreme. The tank-cleaning “octopus” is just the beginning. The company is currently testing prototypes for various purposes. For instance, it is designing robots capable of replacing 100-kilogram tank wheels, a task notorious for causing back injuries in mechanics. Another initiative involves designing specialized robots capable of crawling through mud and water to clear underground tunnels.Rejecting cute consumer robotics in favor of mission-driven utility, the company is also developing five-fingered bionic arms for high-precision military medicine. These advancements aim to shield soldiers from injury and allow for life-saving therapeutic operations in environments contaminated by chemical or biological agents. The goal is not to replace soldiers on the front lines, but to eliminate the burdens, risks, and drudgery of military upkeep.
