Greens MP Gabrielle de Vietri had been wearing a keffiyeh in parliament for months but was told to take it off last week after Liberal MP David Southwick, who is Jewish, made a complaint. Greens leader Ellen Sandell has been wearing the keffiyeh in public,Upper house president Shaun Leane and lower house speaker Maree Edwards on Wednesday said the scarf was a political statement and therefore fell under parliament’s ban on wearing political statements in the chamber.
In Canada, Ontario’s provincial parliament this month loosened its ban on the keffiyeh and is now allowing politicians, staff and visitors to enter the building while wearing the scarf before requiring them to take it off when inside the legislative chamber.
