Australia has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on seven Israelis for involvement in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Follow updates live.

Defence Minister Richard Marles says he has been concerned from the outset that escalating conflict between Israel and the Houthis could trigger a wider conflict. Speaking after Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced she had imposed Magnitsky-style targeted financial sanctions and travel bans on seven Israeli individuals for involvement in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, Marles said Australia must remain “vigilant and alert” about the prospect of escalation.

“There’s been anxiety from the outset here, we’re far from sanguine about this,” Marles said on Thursday, after Israeli fighter jets struck Houthi military targets near Yemen’s Hodeidah port on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding 87, a day after a drone launched by the Iranian-backed group hit Israeli economic hub Tel Aviv.
