A fast end to hostilities in the Middle East would suit the Albanese government as it tries to focus on cost of living.

Already a subscriber?Anthony Albanese would never say it publicly but Labor would be sweating on Israel dispensing quickly with terror group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon to avoid his date with Australian voters becoming a quasi-khaki election., it’s worth remembering the end of the Voice referendum campaign overlapped by a week with the aftermath of Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack that killed 1200 Israelis.

Typically for Peter Dutton, he frames the issue in black and white terms: Albanese’s wishy-washyness has created a permissive atmosphere that has allowed antisemitism to take root, with authorities taking a hands-off approach to a flourishing pro-Palestinian protest movement with its weekly rallies and now dismantled university encampments.

In three United Nations’ votes on Palestinian matters , Australia voted yes to the first two and abstained on the last. The US voted against all three. Australia was also among the 12-country bloc to publicly back the US-led effort to broker a 21-day ceasefire ahead of Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon. For Dutton, the conflict has given him another reason to label Albanese weak and tar the prime minister with the stench of appeasement. In contrast, Dutton firmly plants his flag on the side of law and order, and standing firm against Islamist terrorism.

The record of faith-based parties is mixed in Australian politics. While Muslims make up 25 per cent and a third of voters in the highest profile challenges to senior ministers Tony Burke and Jason Clare, sectarian and ethnic differences mean it cannot be assumed they will move in unison.
