Israel has ramped up its unrelenting attacks on Gaza in its war against Hamas as flaring tensions threaten to boil over into the broader Middle East.
Israeli strikes have left 266 civilians, including 117 children, dead in the past 24 hours, the Palestinian health ministry claimed on Monday.
Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned the latest attacks were not the end, declaring the war could last months. Hamas' October 7 assault left more than 1,400 Israelis dead and another 212 held hostage. The terror group released its first captives – an American mother and daughter – over the weekend.
The death toll is feared to climb as Israel cut off essential supplies like food, water and electricity into Gaza, with international officials warning the territory is on the brink of a major humanitarian crisis. As tensions mount in the Middle East, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong confirmed the government is working to assist 77 Australians trapped in Gaza wanting to flee.
