Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says “what we will do to the enemy will echo down through generations”; Hamas threatens to execute Israeli hostages. Follow updates here.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has denounced Hamas’ attacks on Israel, labelling the militant group’s offensive, which has resulted in the deaths of 800 people in Israel within three days, abhorrent. Wong said Israel had “a right to defend itself” against Hamas’ dreadful assaults, including the taking of hostages and attacks on civilians.
“This is really a dreadful situation, a devastating loss of life, and I think we should all be very clear that these attacks are abhorrent,” Wong told ABC RN Breakfast. Wong pledged Australia’s support for Israel in discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen. “We do stand in solidarity with Israel, and we recognise and support its right to defend itself.”
