Together with the West Bank, it makes up the Palestinian territories. It is similar in size to Washington, D.C., but at more than two million its population is about three times the size. Since 2007, the strip has been ruled by militant group Hamas, which has fought four wars against Israel since taking power. The U.S.
Egypt held control of the narrow strip until 1967, when Israel seized it during the Six Day War. Thousands of Israeli settlers lived in the Gaza Strip until 2005, when Israel withdrew its soldiers and civilians and ceded control to the fragile Palestinian Authority. Hamas militants toppled the Palestinian Authority two years later. Israel maintains and controls a high-tech security fence along its border with the Gaza Strip and tightly controls the flow of people and goods across it.
