Hamas turned over the bodies of four Israeli hostages who were abducted by the militant group on October 7, 2023. Hamas says the hostages were killed by Israeli airstrikes while in captivity in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has released the bodies of four Israeli hostages as part of a ceasefire deal, including three members of the Bibas family, who became a face of the victims of the Palestinian militant group’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel. The body of the children's mother, Shiri Bibas, was also handed over, along with that of Oded Lifshitz, 84, according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents the hostages' families.

"Their abduction and murder by Hamas is an unthinkable atrocity that we condemn unequivocally. No child, no family should endure such tragedy. We call for all hostages’ release," Tzantchev said.Oded Lifshitz, 84, was abducted along with his wife Yocheved, 85 at the time, from their home in kibbutz Nir Oz, a community he helped found.Litshitz was a peace activist and former journalist.

White missiles spattered with red paint had been placed in front of the stage that bore the phrase: “They were killed by USA bombs.” Israeli media outlets have said they will not publish images from the Hamas ceremony out of respect for the dead hostages’ families. A Red Cross convoy drives through paths crowded by Palestinians and Hamas militants during the handover of deceased hostages Thursday. The IDF said military representatives were accompanying the families of those whose loved ones were expected to be among the dead, which would include the Bibas family.

People could be seen gathering in the square, some wiping away tears, while others embraced each other, in photos published by Getty this morning. Israeli flags could be seen flying with the yellow ribbon that has become synonymous with the movement to see hostages held in Hamas' custody released emblazoned across them.

Red Cross workers load the caskets of deceased Israeli hostages into a car after Hamas handed them over following a ceremony in Gaza on Thursday.Once the bodies are identified, a formal announcement will first be made to the hostage families before the identities are confirmed to the public, Netanyahu's office said in a statement shortly after the handover.
