Shadow foreign affairs minister Simon Birmingham has repeated calls from the opposition for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to visit Israel on his way to Washington this week. Birmingham told Insiders that “this is a time for world leaders to ensure they demonstrate support for Israel.
” Birmingham said the Jewish community had told him that a visit by Albanese to Israel “would be welcomed” and “seen as a strong statement of solidarity with Israel at this very difficult time.” Earlier, shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie suggested that a visit to Tel Aviv “would send a good message.” Albanese heads to Washington DC today for an official visit, where he will lobby lawmakers over AUKUS-related legislation and meet US President Joe Biden.
