Gaza is under siege as Israel says supplies will not be allowed to cross the border until Israeli hostages are released

The death toll in Gaza surpassed 1,300 according to its health authority, as the enclave under Israeli bombardment is blocked off from food, water, fuel and electricity.Hamas has taken more than 100 Israeli hostages into the Gaza strip and killed more than 1200 Israelis in a surprise attack on Saturday.

Hamas has run the territory since 2007, when it won elections and then ousted the Palestinian Authority from the area. No elections have been held in Gaza since. The blockade prohibits Palestinians from leaving the enclave, other than in very rare circumstances, such as life-threatening medical conditions. As such, the Gaza Strip has been likened to an “open air prison” by many, including Human Rights Watch.

The Israeli military has warned Gazans to evacuate their homes, but there are no safe places of refuge on the strip. CNN has reported that there are talks to allow Palestinian civilians to leave Gaza into Egypt before any potential ground invasion by Israeli forces to take back their hostages.
