The Gaza death toll passed 6,500, Palestinian authorities said. U.N. Secretary General Guterres condemned the Hamas attack but said it “did not happen in a vacuum.”
Negotiations to release the hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip are “still ongoing,” Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani said Wednesday. The small Gulf state has played a key role in mediating the negotiations, leveraging its long-standing ties with Hamas to facilitate the release of four hostages so far, including two on Monday.
“We will remain hopeful,” he added, referring to the ongoing negotiations. “We are sure that the only way to reach an immediate and peaceful solution to this crisis is that all channels of communication remain open with all relevant parties concerned,” he said earlier in the conference.
