The White House says Israel is to begin four-hour pauses in its strikes on northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the head of the UN has said the number of civilians killed in the Palestinian region shows there is something 'clearly wrong' with Israel's military operations.
Reacting to the White House's announcement of four-hour humanitarian pauses, US correspondent Mark Stone said it was 'a significant moment - a big move – if it ends up actually happening'.It appears that it is 'precisely what aid agencies and the UN have been calling for' in terms of the minimum length of humanitarian pauses required, he said.
But this is a one-sided pause and has not been agreed to by Hamas, said Stone.'It is perfectly possible that the Israelis will end up coming under fire and would then be forced to break that pause.'He said that if it holds, it will be 'very positive' in a humanitarian sense. The pause has not started yet, he said, pointing out explosions he could hear in the distance.
