The Gaza invasion has reached a more difficult and dangerous phase. Tens of thousands of civilians are fleeing southwards.

| Israel says it has already destroyed 130 Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip, releasing a video that apparently shows army engineers blowing up or digging out the militant group’s subterranean structures.

On Wednesday Israel had to extend its daily four-hour window for the evacuation, after unexpectedly large numbers of Gazans fled the war on foot, with only what possessions they could carry. Hamas officials dispute the IDF’s claims about al-Shifa, as does the Qatar-funded al-Jazeera television network. They say a claimed tunnel entrance is an access hatch for a water reservoir.

Israel’s ground invasion began on October 29, after several weeks of air strikes in response to Hamas’s October 7 attack that killed 1400 Israeli residents and captured about 240 hostages.UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the death toll among UN aid workers now stood at 92 – the largest number killed in a single conflict since the organisation was created in 1945.

But US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there could be no broader ceasefire. He sketched out a potential post-conflict scenario, following a likely “transition period” of Israeli occupation.
