An explosion has killed hundreds of people at a Gaza hospital crammed with patients and displaced people, health authorities in the Hamas-ruled enclave say.

Israel and Palestinian militants are blaming each other for a blast at a Gaza hospital crammed with patients and displaced people. It happened on the eve of US President Joe Biden's scheduled visit to Israel

But Israel's military denied responsibility, saying military intelligence suggested the hospital was hit by a failed rocket launch by the enclave's Palestinian Islamic Jihad military group. A civil defence chief in Hamas-ruled Gaza told Al Jazeera television that more than 300 people were killed at Al Ahli al-Arabi Hospital.Hamas said the blast at the hospital mostly killed displaced people.Earlier on Tuesday, the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said an Israeli air strike had killed at least six people at one of its schools, which has been functioning as a shelter for displaced people.

The official said Mr Abbas was returning to Ramallah, the seat of his government in the occupied West Bank.Mr Biden was also due to "hear from Israel what it needs to defend its people" during his visit to the region, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
