After weeks of intense negotiations, Israel and Hamas have reached a multi-phase ceasefire agreement, committing both sides to end the war in Gaza. The agreement involves the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas in exchange for a larger number of Palestinian detainees.

Amidst the rubble of buildings destroyed in Israel i strikes, people walk past stalls selling goods in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, on Wednesday. A multi-phase ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas , committing both sides to end the Gaza war, has been reached, according to U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman James Risch during Sen. Marco Rubio's confirmation hearing to become the next Secretary of State.

'I've just been advised that there's been a cease fire announced in Gaza,' Risch stated. 'Before we all celebrate, though, obviously we're all going to want to see how well that executes.'The initial six-week phase of the agreement involves Hamas releasing 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for a significantly larger number of Palestinian detainees. While the exact number of Palestinian detainees to be released remains unclear, Hamas has indicated its desire for a higher ratio of detainees per hostage freed alive. The group has not disclosed the number of hostages still alive, but Israel believes most are. Palestinian officials estimate that around 1,000 Palestinians will be released from Israeli custody as part of the deal. The agreement follows weeks of intensive, indirect negotiations in Doha, Qatar. Facilitators from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar mediated the talks, with envoys from both President Biden's and President-elect Trump's administrations present, urging both sides to finalize the deal. The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched an attack on southern Israel from Gaza, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of over 250 hostages into Gaza. Around 100 hostages were previously released in a similar deal between Israel and Hamas in late 2023, while others were either rescued or found dead. Approximately 240 Palestinians were released from Israeli jails as part of that previous agreement. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of over 46,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, who reported that the majority of casualties were women and children. The Israeli military has reported the deaths of 405 soldiers in the fighting since its invasion of Gaza
