Israel bombed the home of Hamas's chief in Gaza as hostilities stretched into a seventh day. The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Sunday to discuss ways to restore calm

With no sign of an end to the worst outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian violence in years the United Nations Security Council was due to meet later on Sunday to discuss the hostilities.

"These are moments of horror that no one can describe. Like an earthquake hit the area," said Mahmoud Hmaid, a father of seven who was helping with the rescue efforts. Many of the rockets have been intercepted by an Israeli anti-missile system while some have fallen short of the border. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reminded all sides on Saturday that "that any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

Israel Returns Occupied Territories To Palestinians After Running Out Of Targets To Hit In GazaIsrael Returns Occupied Territories To Palestinians After Running Out Of Targets To Hit In GazaJERUSALEM—Unveiling a new policy to relinquish control of thousands of settlements, Israeli government officials reportedly returned the occupied territories to Palestinians Monday after running out of targets to hit in Gaza. “Effective immediately, we are returning land in the West Bank, Golan Heights, and east Jerusalem to Palestine in order to give our armed forces many more buildings to hit,” said Israel minister of defense Benny Gantz, adding that enough was enough and the smoldering craters of rubble in Gaza no longer offered the Israeli Defense Forces sufficient airstrike objectives. “We will provide any Palestinians previously forced out of their homes in these territories safe passage to return, because we firmly believe these buildings must be re-occupied by Palestinians in order to give our statements that they’re harboring terrorists credibility. Otherwise, we will be forced to mount increased attacks on refugee camps, which isn’t quite as rewarding.” At press time, IDF soldiers had descended into the occupied territories to force Palestinians back into the buildings due to be bombed.\n

Israeli strikes kill 33, topple buildings in Gaza CityIsraeli strikes kill 33, topple buildings in Gaza CityIsraeli airstrikes on Gaza City flattened three buildings and killed at least 33 people Sunday, medics said, making it the deadliest single attack since heavy fighting broke out between Israel and the territory's militant Hamas rulers nearly a week ago. The violence, which came as international mediators worked to broker a cease-fire and stave off an Israeli ground invasion of the territory, marked the worst fighting here since the devastating 2014 war in Gaza. The airstrikes Sunday hit a busy downtown street of residential buildings and storefronts over the course of five minutes just after midnight, destroying two adjacent buildings and one about 50 yards (meters) down the road.
