The arrest last week of Ismael Zambada García, or “El Mayo,” and a son of famed drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was a coup for U.S. authorities, but not...

This combo of images provided by the U.S. Department of State show Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a historic leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, left, and Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of another infamous cartel leader, after they were arrested by U.S. authorities in Texas, the U.S. Justice Department said Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Zambada, 76, took over the leadership of the Sinaloa cartel after the arrest of Guzmán, who is currently serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison. El Mayo was notoriously secretive and evaded capture for years. Under his leadership, the cartel turned its attention to the lucrative fentanyl market. The one-pill-can-kill drug is easily produced from cheap ingredients, is easy to smuggle in from Mexico and has killed tens of thousands of Americans.

It is also not surprising that Mexican authorities, including López Obrador, were only notified after the arrests. Leaks can come from anywhere, after all. There is legitimate fear that these arrests will lead to violence as other groups like the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel try to fill the vacuum. That is always a risk. But fear can’t guide action against the cartels. Not when so many Americans are dying of fentanyl poisoning. These arrests are a signal that the U.S. still has power to hold to account those who hurt our people. Let’s just hope this is the beginning, and not the end, of a string of arrests..
