Doctors on the Isle of Man are set to go on strike for two days from January 22nd in a dispute over pay. The British Medical Association (BMA) says the walkout is the first in the island's history.

Doctors on the Isle of Man are set to embark on their first-ever strike action next week, starting from January 22nd, in a dispute over pay. The British Medical Association (BMA) announced that its members will walk out for 48 hours, beginning at 7:00 AM, following unsuccessful negotiations with Manx Care, the island's healthcare provider. Manx Care had proposed a 6% pay increase as an interim measure, falling short of the BMA's demands.

The BMA emphasized that doctors would provide essential services during the strike, operating under a Christmas Day cover system. This means emergency care will remain accessible, but many other routine services will be limited. A spokeswoman for Manx Care stated that they would prioritize minimizing the impact on patients and service users during the strike and emphasized that they remained engaged in discussions with the BMA to find a resolution. Manx Care acknowledged that the union had provided the minimum notice required and highlighted that the announcement followed a productive meeting on Tuesday, facilitated by the Manx Industrial Relations Service. The strike action comes after a December ballot where 95% of BMA members, encompassing doctors, salaried dentists, and consultants, voted in favor of industrial action. Chairman of the Isle of Man Medical Society, Prakash Thiagarajan, expressed that doctors had no desire to strike but had communicated their position clearly to Manx Care. He stated, 'It's disappointing to find ourselves in this position, but the solution is clear: restore our lost pay.' The BMA remains hopeful that further discussions with Manx Care will lead to a satisfactory offer, preventing the strike from going ahead
