The New York Islanders showcased their resilience with a stunning comeback victory against the St. Louis Blues, scoring four unanswered goals after being down 3-0. This win, marked by Mathew Barzal's overtime goal, highlights the team's ability to overcome deficits and their recent success in overtime, solidifying their playoff aspirations.

Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images The intangibles needed to make a long run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs have largely remained unchanged: Poise under pressure, a knack for comebacks, and a magic touch in overtime. The New York Islanders seem to have all three of those in what is becoming as magical a season as it is surprising. Patrick Roy’s men pulled their latest rabbit out of the hat on Tuesday night in St. Louis against the Blues, overturning a 3-0 second-period deficit by scoring four unanswered, ending with Mathew Barzal’s dandy of an overtime winner. It marked the 22nd time in franchise history that the Islanders have come back from a three-goal deficit, and the first time since Oct. 29, 2022, against the Colorado Avalanche. It was the Islanders’ second straight overtime win to extend a strong run of play in which they’ve won 10 of their last 14. Five of their last seven wins have also come in the extra frame.“We talk about all year to be bold and to play with some swagger and clarity and belief in what we’re doing,” Roy said . “I think that’s what we’re doing. We’re going out there, staying calm, and playing our game. We believe we can come back. All we wanted to do was win that third period. I’m no genius, but if you don’t win a period, you don’t win a hockey game.” The Islanders’ penchant for comebacks is putting them in elite company this season. They have 18 wins when trailing, which is already the eighth-most in franchise history with 17 games left to play. Only the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks have more such victories this year. New York also has eight wins when trailing in the third period, ranking fourth in the league behind the Vegas Golden Knights , the Habs, and the Ducks .“It depends on the time of the game, but if you’re down three halfway through the game, it allows you to get down the walls, play just a little bit less cautious with the puck,” he said. “When you flip your mind and play offensively, it can change a little bit.”Joe Pantorno has been the executive sports editor of amNewYork since 2020.
