The security in Kabul has deteriorated Tuesday due to new terrorist threats by the Islamic State branch in Afghanistan.
Terrorist threats are now jeopardizing the massive American evacuation effort underway in Afghanistan’s capital, Pentagon officials relayed to lawmakers Tuesday, according to three congressional aides and another source familiar with the intelligence.
The window for the evacuation is narrowing due to the new threats, the assessment indicates, a potential motivation for the military to wrap up its operation by the end of the week, one of the sources said. Since Sunday, the U.S. has directed American citizens and green card holders to the Ministry of Interior so they can be escorted to the airport, the defense official and a person familiar told POLITICO.
