Is this Joe Thornton’s year? Florida Panthers might be the best team he’s been on
Living in South Florida seems to agree with Joe Thornton.
Now he’s with a Panthers team that might represent the best chance he’s had of winning a Cup in his 24-year NHL career. Thornton spent 15 years with the Sharks, impacting the franchise like no other player in the team’s history with playoff appearances in 13 of 14 years from 2006 to 2019. Before he was acquired by Wilson in an organization-altering deal in Nov. 2005, Thornton was evolving into a superstar with the Boston Bruins, leading that team to division titles in 2001 and 2003.
The Panthers still have the same core they had from 2017 to 2019 when Bob Boughner coached the team, as Ekblad and forwards Sasha Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau remain elite players. “Like every team in that position they’re in right now, they’ll probably tweak or do something at the deadline to improve their team. But I really like what they’ve done in the last couple of years. It’s a much different team than I was when I was here.”
