NASA’s Europa Clipper took off Monday with devices built by Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. They’re bound for Europa, a moon of Jupiter.

San Antonio scientists counting down to ’s Gina DiBraccio said on the eve of launch. Europa Clipper won’t look for life; it has no life detectors. Instead, the spacecraft will zero in on the ingredients necessary to sustain life, searching for organic compounds and other clues as it peers beneath the ice for suitable conditions. That’s where the Southwest Research Institute instruments come in.
