The Oxford English Dictionary defines the American Dream as "the ideal that every citizen of the United States should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative." The share of respondents who say the American Dream has never been attainable is down slightly from 18% in 2023 to 17% in 2024. The figure had not risen above single digits prior to 2023.
