NDIS Minister Bill Shorten and Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor have locked horns over the federal government’s position on the conflict between Israel and Hamas, amid growing criticism from the opposition about recent pro-Palestinian comments made by two Cabinet ministers.

The Labor and Liberal MPs clashed in a 2GB Question Time interview on Friday, where Mr Shorten was repeatedly pushed to admit Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had “failed” to prove Australia’s solidarity with Israel.Mr Shorten said the cancellation did not in any way reflect on Australia’s support for Israel and the Coalition was using “red herrings” by pinning repeated blame on the Prime Minister.

“There's many ways we can show solidarity… maybe the opposition need to step up a bit and stop trying to look at every issue through the lens of pinging Anthony Albanese,” he said. The Prime Minister is being pressured to clarify his stance on Israel after federal Labor and state members broke ranks to publicly support Palestinians killed in the retaliation against Hamas.Mr Taylor cited remarks made by Labor frontbenchers Ed Husic and Anne Aly in support of Palestine on Thursday, where they expressed sympathy for civilians in Gaza who had unduly been caught in warfare and were being “collectively punished for Hamas’ barbarism”.
