Sarkisian has baked the cake, and Longhorn fans have exercised patience. The only thing that stands in their way, he said, “is us.”
In Year 1, Sarkisian was still sorting through players who were bought in and who wanted out. Now, the team is made up of players he recruited plus those 13 holdovers who have contributed to the “team-first mentality” that Sarkisian wants.

In 2017, he was hired as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator. In 2019, Saban brought him back as the Tide’s offensive coordinator. Sarkisian’s success there paved the way for his return to head coaching at Texas in 2021. That’s why Sarkisian cherishes the little things now. That’s why he’s no longer looking far ahead. That’s why he comes into the building bubbling with energy.
Texas wants a championship. It always does. “The expectations at Texas are always crazy,” athletic director Chris Del Conte said.
