Leaked information about the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra suggests a return to the quad-camera system with a 3x and 5x zoom setup. While this might seem redundant, the author questions the practicality of this combination, suggesting that a 50MP 3x camera already offers sufficient zoom capabilities.
Samsung hasn't changed the 3x zoom camera on its premium Galaxy Ultra flagships since the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which shares the same tiny sensor with the S21 Ultra. When Samsung did change the sensor in the Galaxy S21 Ultra to S22 Ultra upgrade cycle, it was actually a downgrade from a slightly larger 3x zoom snapper with a slightly longer focal length.
While this difference is probably too small to matter, the fact that the convenient 3x camera hasn't changed in the past 4-5 years tells you everything you need to know about the company's attention to camera hardware. Samsung is finally about to do something about that. Unfortunately, we aren't talking about a major camera hardware overhaul involving all cameras, but it's exactly the ancient 3x zoom sensor that's about to make way for a more recent 50MP camera - and hopefully one with a larger sensor, although this isn't exactly confirmed yet. However, while I'm glad Samsung is finally about to upgrade the old 12MP 3x camera, I can't help but question the decision to continue pairing the 3x zoom camera with a 5x zoom camera... 3x + 5x optical zoom - is the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera setup a waste of space?
