'I'm not sure what lesson you're supposed to learn from' the actor's motivational seminar, host John Oliver says, 'other than if you try to do drugs with Matthew McConaughey, you will die.'
Matthew McConaughey's 5½-hour lecture was featured on"Last Week Tonight" on Sunday, along with San Antonio plumbing company Radiant and its masterful TV ads." when the main segment — on the border and President Biden's immigration policies — barely earns a passing reference.
On Sunday night, John Oliver, host of HBO's weekly news recap show, made several references to the I-35 corridor. From favorite son Matthew McConaughey, born in Uvalde with strong ties to Austin, to ATX andThe first mention of a Central Texas icon was a brief reference to McConaughey's 5½-hour motivational seminar,"originally held on April 24. The seminar features a half-buttoned-up McConaughey, as Oliver gives viewers just a"taste" of the video lecture. "In 1999, I just had a dream that I was floating down a river naked, wrapped up in anacondas, sharks, piranhas and crocodiles," McConaughey states."And lined along the ridge of the river were thousands of African tribesmen, each holding a shield and spear. And it wasn't a nightmare. Actually, it was a wet dream.""I'm not sure what lesson you're supposed to learn from it," Oliver says,"other than if you try to do drugs with Matthew McConaughey, you will die."Matthew McConaughey describes plummeting thousands of feet aboard flight out of Austin Later in the show, the program presents another segment, titled"Is Matthew McConaughey okay?" The segment features plenty of quotes from McConaughey's nearly six-hour talk. "I believe that the recipe for your particular secret sauce is under the hood of what you do well, not what you don't," says McConaughey in one example. "I fall down, I get up and dust myself off like that," he states in another, particularly vivid example."I step in a pile of shit, I keep running while I'm cleaning that shit off my shoe on the go. I'll step in the same pile of shit every time around the bend, because I never stop to take inventory of just where that pile of shit that I keep stepping in was." Oliver eventually reaches Radiant Plumbing before the show signs off for the week. In early March, the show issued a challenge to the Austin and San Antonio-based company, founded in 1999. The company's ads are"elaborate, movie-themed" spoofs, including ones satirizing"The Avengers" and"Dune.""You know, when Frank Herbert wrote 'Dune,' I doubt he realized that the quintessential version of his story would be made not by Jadorowsky, not by David Lynch, not by Denis Villenueve, but by a gaggle of Texas toilet specialists with an After Effects login," Oliver says. Because the show loved Radiant's"ingenuity," it issued a challenge. If Radiant created an ad spoofing a movie selected by the show,"Last Week Tonight" would feature that ad on its program and give $10,000 to the Central Texas Food Bank in Austin.It turns out the movie selected was 1999's"Magnolia," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. "That's right, we asked them to turn PT Anderson's sprawling, three-hour epic into a commercial for a toilet-repair business," Oliver states."Which is easier said than done." Oliver continues that it wasn't going to be an easy process, but that the show was confident in Radiant's abilities. The ad, titled"Magtoiletolia," spoofed many of the movie's signature scenes, and Oliver noted that Radiant"really outdid themselves." "Just like 'Magnolia' itself, that ad is a piece of art that requires multiple viewings to truly appreciate," Oliver says."Because the level of detail here is complete madness." Oliver says that every detail in the ad is deliberate, featuring more Easter eggs than a"10-episode Marvel TV show."
