Data shows wait times vary widely, with some extreme delays persisting.
This action follows weeks of staffing shortages linked to the partial government shutdown, which have contributed to longer passenger screening times. Some airports have recommended that travelers arrive several hours earlier than usual.
. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that nearly 500 TSA officers have left the agency. Newsweek conducted an analysis of TSA wait times across three different dates, collecting data at 11:15 a.m. ET each day, drawing on publicly available information, has contacted DHS for comment.throughout the week. Charlotte Douglas International reported 5 minutes on March 23, rising slightly to 6 minutes on March 25, then dropping to 4 minutes on March 26. Ronald Reagan Washington National remained stable at 5 minutes on March 23, 25, and 26, and Minneapolis–Saint Paul stayed at 5 minutes across the same period. Philadelphia saw a decrease from 12 minutes on March 23 to 7 minutes on March 25 and 26, showing some improvement.. Denver started at 7 minutes on March 23, rose slightly to 8 minutes on March 25, and then spiked to 29 minutes on March 26. Dallas/Fort Worth had 27 minutes on March 23, dropped to 8 minutes on March 25, then climbed to 20 minutes on March 26, highlighting inconsistent throughput despite ICE assistance. Phoenix Sky Harbor steadily improved from 29 minutes on March 23 to 24 minutes on March 25 and 19 minutes on March 26. Salt Lake City dropped from 22 minutes to 10 minutes and then 7 minutes over the same period.severe delays. George Bush Intercontinental faced the country’s longest waits, with 180 minutes on March 23, decreasing to 120 minutes on March 25, but returning to 180 minutes on March 26. Orlando International improved from 40 minutes on March 23 to 27 minutes on March 25, and then further down to 13 minutes on March 26, showing that some mitigation occurred. Miami International dropped from 20 minutes on March 23 to 9 minutes on March 25, rising slightly to 12 minutes on March 26. Some airports reported “paused” operations on certain days, which on the TSA wait times site means that live wait-time data for that airport or checkpoint is temporarily not being updated, not necessarily that passengers were not being screened. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta paused reporting from March 23–26. LaGuardia remained paused throughout the period. Newark paused on March 23–25 before showing a 3-minute wait on March 26, while John F. Kennedy reported 31 minutes on March 23, paused on March 25, and then 26 minutes on March 26. ICE agents have been deployed to assist with logistics, crowd management, and security, but they cannot perform TSA screening, which requires specialized training. The data shows that even with ICE support, airports such as IAH, MCO, and PHX continued to experience long waits, while smaller or medium-sized airports maintained shorter waits, often under 10 minutes.told Reuters:"On a personal level, I don’t think we need them here. We need to be paid.": “This reckless shutdown has driven nearly 500 TSA officers to quit, while thousands more are forced to call out because they can’t afford gas, childcare, food, or rent. As Democrats continue to put the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our air travel system at risk, Donald Trump is taking decisive action—deploying hundreds of ICE officers, already funded by Congress, to the airports under the greatest strain. This move will reinforce TSA operations, help secure our skies, and minimize disruptions for travelers.” DHS reported call-out rates at airports on March 25, with an overall call-out rate of 11.14 percent and more than 3,120 officers calling out. This marks a slight decrease from March 22, which had the highest shutdown call-out rate at 11.76 percent.Baltimore/Washington International Airport : 29.1%Philadelphia International Airport : 23.5%Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport : 22.8%Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport : 36.1%
