'The Guardians do not make for easy viewing when they swing the bat. They have a master’s degree in agony,' writes Paul Hoynes.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Kansas City Royals, Sept. 7, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The chain did not stay unbroken Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium, but the Guardians didn’t lose because of it.
The Guardians’ 102 homers are the second fewest in the big leagues, meaning 26 teams have hit more and only the Detroit Tigers have hit fewer at 84. Last year Cleveland, despite hitting 203 homers, finished 13 games out of first place in the AL Central, while breaking an eight-season winning streak. Today they are in first place in the division headed into a three-game series against Twins on Friday at Target Field with first place at stake.
Wednesday night they had eight hits, six singles and two doubles by rookie Oscar Gonzalez. In the three-game series against the Royals, who have the worst pitching staff in the league, they had 30 hits. There was one homer, five doubles and 24 singles. One base at a time does not produce an avalanche of runs. The Guardians are averaging 4.13 runs per game. It is the lowest average among any AL division leader or wild-card contender, which is one of the reasons games like Wednesday night are more common than not.
After that came Sam Hentes , Enyel De Los Santos , James Karinchak , Trevor Stephan and Bryan Shaw . Shaw handed the ball and a 1-0 lead to Emmanuel Clase in the ninth.
