For a planet to sustain plate tectonics, it must have a convective mantle, Foley said. Cold, dense surface material sinks back into the mantle at subduction zones, where one plate slips beneath another, and new material rises up where plates spread apart. Without the convective mantle, there wouldn't be enough energy to move the plates.
The combination of these factors could explain why Earth is the only planet known to exhibit plate tectonics today. In a 2022, Collins and his colleagues found that Jupiter's icy moon Europa had exhibited"plate-tectonic-like" activity in the past: Parts of the moon's icy shell were broken into plates that spread and collided.

Canada Rare Earth Secures 70% Stake in Laos Rare Earth RefineryCanada Rare Earth announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Laotian company to purchase 70% of a fully permitted rare earth refinery. The refinery, with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per year, was built 12 years ago but has remained idle due to policy changes. The Lao government is now supporting the refinery's operation and encouraging in-country processing of rare earth concentrates. The refinery is expected to be operational in Q4 2025 after minor refurbishments.
