Such remarks earned O’Rourke deserved praise from his fellow 2020 Democrats. “Congressman O’Rourke, I think, has done a wonderful job of expressing all of the emotion that all of us have about what happened in El Paso,” fellow Texan and 2020 contenderover the weekend in Iowa, where the other Democratic hopefuls gathered to make their pitch to voters at the State Fair.

O’Rourke’s campaign and supporters have bristled at the suggestion that he abandon ship. “I think in this age of Trump, when we’re all looking for moral leadership and presidential values and, really, American values, Beto O’Rourke has been a light in the woods here for us in the past couple weeks,”a former Democratic National Committee member who has helped O’Rourke in South Carolina, told.
